Interview with Vicente Sanz Rodilana, Manager of Bodegas Vicente Sanz
When and why does Bodegas Vicente Sanz emerge?
In 1978 my father, Vicente Sanz, decided to plant 4 hectares of vineyard of the Verdejo variety at the end of Mount Valdestillas, a privileged area for the cultivation of vines with a loam-clayey soil at 750 m. of altitude between the Douro and Adaja rivers. After 4 years, we decided to make inside the inner courtyard of the house a thermally prepared ship for the production of wines, especially the planted variety, we equipped it with the oenological machinery of the moment and that was our beginning.
We continue planting every year another hectare of vineyard and making extensions in the winery. In the year 1991 we accepted the D.O. Rueda and wines from the Land of Medina, counting at this time with 15 hectares of vineyards of the varieties Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo, and we began to elaborate under the regulation of D.O. Wheel.
In 2005, my son Alberto Sanz joined us as a young vitiviniculturist helping us in the field work and learning the winery works.
How many hectares do you have and what is the philosophy of this winery?
At present we have 45 hectares of vineyard in the terms of Valdestillas and Serrada and we have been adapting the winery to the needs of the moment. The current capacity of the winery is 400,000 liters.
The harvest is done mechanically and at night taking advantage of the low temperatures of the night to avoid oxidation of the musts.

How do you market your wines?
We sell our wines through national distributors in the different provinces and islands in a percentage of 65% of the production. 20% of it, in food chains and specialized stores and the remaining 15%, in the foreign market, in Europe, the US and Puerto Rico.
Our wines can be found in different points of the province and in Valladolid, for example, in the Restaurant Don Bacalao, Cervantes, Los Zagales and the Japanese Tavern, among others.
Its flagship wine and emblematic brand of the winery is Vicaral. How is it?
The first brand with which we bottled our first wines was Vicaral being the pioneer and most emblematic. It is the one that has given us more joys as in this last Mondial Contest of Brussels that has achieved a gold medal. Made with grapes from our own Verdejo vineyards, Rueda Verdejo is a young, dry and fruity white wine.

Vicaral was his first wine, then came Cañada Real, Alberto Sanz, Ihsus and Miralalba. Can you briefly describe what each one consists of and what is its main characteristic?
Cañadareal is our second brand that honors the glen that passes through the center of town is also made with 100% Verdejo grapes as all our brands with which we produce white wines within the D.O. Wheel.
Alberto Sanz wanted it to be a more commercial brand and that it had more presence in the hospitality industry and in day-to-day chatting, also, it is made with 100% Verdejo grapes and under the D.O. Wheel.
Ihsus whose meaning is sushi (Japanese food) upside down. It is a wine made with a mixture of three varieties of grapes, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Verdejo and 30% Viura, providing different nuances to those we are used to. We elaborate it within wines from the Land of Castilla y León.
Miralalba is our red wine, is due to the name of a payment within the municipality of Valdestillas to where part of our vineyards. With this brand we produce a red wine with 85% of Tempranillo grapes and 15% of the Cabernet Sauvignon variety. It is also a wine that is within the Wines of the Land of Castilla y León
What are your future projects for the future?
We have a project in sight that we will implement this year, due to the growth of the winery in recent years, which is the construction of new facilities and winery with processing capacity of 1,000,000 liters equipped with the most advanced technologies.
